Other Methods Of Treatment

Specializations in Medicine.

Many specialists (traumatologists) try to use several methods for scoliosis treatment but most often Harrington’s method is applied (surgical implantation of a metal instrumentation that immobilises discs). This fixation system does not allow the vertebral column degenerate but also there is no possibility to heal it. In particularly severe cases, after various accidents, e.g. after a road accident, this fixation system can be very helpful.

Americans apply another method. They developed a material similar to plaster based on animal bones and surgically put this material around vertebrae and make them immovable for the rest of human life. Unfortunately, this method does not heal pain. No one can help for such a patient.
Another popular method of treatment is kinesitherapy. Using various exercises and Volt’s method, patient’s condition can be improved, scoliosis can be stopped or a little bit reduced by natural methods without surgical intervention but it cannot be totally healed.

Another option to treat various body disorders is manual therapy, chiropractice or osteopathy.  More has been achieved  by these methods of treatment than by others. Unfortunately, as traditional medicine, they separate bones from muscles.  Therefore, severe scoliosis cases cannot be healed by them.
Corsets And Orthopaedic Insoles.

When it has been determined that scoliosis is a continually degenerating spinal deformity, its prevention methods were sought (e.g. baby diapering) but everything was in vain.

In the former Soviet Union there were various institutes and boarding-schools where children were not allowed to do sports, move – they had to stay in bed all the time. Their bodies were in plaster corsets. They had to wear orthopaedic footwear or orthopaedic insoles in order to prevent scoliosis progress.  In case of scoliosis one leg can look shorter than another, therefore orthopaedic devices were applied in order to compensate this difference and to equalize length of the legs or shoulder level. In many cases these devices were incorrectly prescribed.  They did not know that man’s centre of balance is in the waist area and it is necessary to equalize the level of pelvic bones and not the legs or shoulders. Therefore, in some cases scoliosis progressed.

In case of scoliosis it is necessary to apply to manual therapy specialists and restore the balance level of the pelvic bones.  Only afterwards, if it is necessary, one can use orthopaedic devices.

It is not recommended to use various posture correction devices (belts, etc.). Any device does not reset dislocated vertebrae and does not correct scoliosis and deformities of pelvic bones but only weakens back muscles. People will become dependent on these devices. An example given in section “Several Treatment Cases” about consequences of spinal column correction straps shows that these devices do not heal scoliosis but allow it to intensify.  There are no changes while straps are worn but when they are taken off, the disease progresses.

Cases When Treatment Cannot Be Applied:
  • To patients with fever.
  • In case of contagious skin diseases.
  • In case of non-healed postoperative wounds.
  • To patients with a very weak heart function.
  • In case of osteoporosis.

Cases When Treatment Can Be Applied:
  • All cases, except the above non-application cases.
  • To very small children.
  • To pregnant women.
